What’s the Point of Going Camping?

If you have never been camping, or it just doesn’t appeal to you, you might be wondering why other people like it.

The main point of going camping is to enjoy the outdoors and get away from daily life.

We asked our friends what their favorite parts of going camping are so we could let you know why people enjoy camping so much. They gave us 35 reasons they love it.

Why I Love Camping

1. Relaxing outdoors

There’s no better way to relax than resting while you’re camping. You’re outside in nature without a list of things to do.

2. Cooking over the fire

Cooking while camping can be really fun! Eating delicious food makes any experience better. In fact, we have put together some lists of Dutch oven meals and desserts that you should check out to get an idea of what you can make while camping.

3. Quality with family

Whether you are camping with your immediate family or your extended family, camping gives you quality time with them. There are less distractions and a lot of fun things you can do together.

4. Going to new places

Picking new campsites to visit gives you a totally different camping experience each time. Discovering beautiful areas with fun surrounding activities is a huge benefit of camping.

5. Being unplugged

As much as we love our cell phones and the internet, there is something special about unplugging. A lot of camping spots don’t have any internet or cell service and while sometimes inconvenient, it can be nice to ditch your phone and laptop.

6. Getting out of the house

A lot of us are homebound more than we’d like. Camping is a great excuse to pack up and get a change of scenery.

7. Playing in the water

If you are camping near water, there are so many fun things you can do. Swimming, boating, jet skiing, and more fun options open up. There are few things better than spending the day out in the water and then warming up by the campfire at night.

8. Making campfires

Need an excuse to be a pyro? Not while camping. In fact, making fires is an appreciated skill when you’re camping. It’s really satisfying to build and feed a fire.

9. Spending time with friends

Most of us don’t get to see our friends as much as we’d like to. Going camping is a great way to get in some quality time and strengthen your bond with people. You get to do activities together and share meals and stories without time constraints and interruptions.

10. Fishing

Fishing is a favorite of ours and a lot of other people enjoy it while camping. Just fishing is fun enough by itself but being able to catch a trout and cook it over the fire is so rewarding.

11. Campfire smell

The smell of a campfire is another reason people love to camp. There is a reason why they make fragrances that smell like campfire.

12. Not worrying about household chores

When you are at home it’s easy to look around and see a bunch of things that need to get done. When you are camping, it’s easy to forget your to-do list and just enjoy yourself.

13. Looking at the stars at night

There is no better way to enjoy the night sky than while camping.

We don’t have memories of every we’ve spent working. In fact, those days kind of blur together. However, we do remember each camping trip we’ve taken. It’s easy to make lasting memories when you are out in nature and the pace is slower.

15. Watching the sun set

You have access to watch some beautiful sunsets while camping.

People invest a lot of time and money accruing quality camping equipment. Our friends said they like to get out just to enjoy some of it. They have everything from fun cooking equipment to ATVs and boats.

18. Meeting other campers

Some of our friends said they like to go camping to meet new friends.

19. Getting away from people

Some of our friends went the opposite way and said they like to go camping to get away from other people.

20. Not having to work

If you plan it right, you really don’t have to do anything while you camp. It’s a delightful break from the grueling 9-5.

21. Skill-building with kids

Camping lets you teach your kids some really cool skills. Wilderness and survival skills come in handy and it’s great for kids to at least learn the basics in a real setting.

A lot of people, especially us introverts, need time to recharge. Doing so in nature is really therapeutic.

23. The energy and good vibes of everyone

Everyone seems to radiate positivity when camping.

24. Making s’mores

Roasting marshmallows for s’mores is the only reason to go camping some of us need. Everyone who camps has a favorite way to roast their marshmallow to make the perfect s’more.

25. Enjoying the sights

Nature is really beautiful. When you’re camping you get to take in the sights slowly and really enjoy them.

26. Hiking

Hiking while camping is really fun. A lot of people choose not to set up a whole campsite and just hike and sleep where they end up.

27. Being able to slow down

This is a favorite of most campers. Slowing down is something we don’t get to do a lot. Jobs, obligations, and day-to-day stress have us running ragged. You don’t even have to pay attention to the clock when you’re camping.

28. Seeing animals

You get to see animals that you normally wouldn’t when you go camping. We love seeing chipmunks, deer, elk, and a variety of other animals on our trips.

Getting away from the city is a huge reason people like to go camping. If you are stuck in a metropolitan area, it can be great to get away. Get away from traffic, the close neighbors, the noise.

30. Drinking coffee by the fire

Drinking coffee by a campfire is so much more special than drinking it on your way to work or as part of your normal routine. There are a lot of delicious ways to enjoy a cup of coffee while you camp too.

31. The fresh air

Fresh air is something most of us don’t get enough of. We only get a few short moments of being outside a lot of the time. Getting to breathe in fresh air for day or two is so good for you.

32. Singing around the fire

If you love to sing or play an instrument. You can totally live out the stereotype of singing around the campfire.

33. Reading a book outside

It’s way easier to make time to read a book when you’re camping. We love to set up the hammock and lounge around while we read books that we haven’t made time for at home.

34. Telling campfire stories

Passing around campfire stories is a lot of kids’ favorite thing about camping. You can tell spooky or historical tales in the firelight.

35. Drinking adult beverages

We aren’t going to lie. Camping is the ultimate excuse to let loose and have a drink in the daytime. A cold beer or your favorite mixed drink is extra special while camping.

The Fun of Camping
